What’s In Our Disney Bag For A Family Of Four (Park-Tested Must-Haves)
A trip to Walt Disney World can absolutely be a “just show up and let the magic happen” kind of experience. But we’ve found that a little preparation goes a long way toward making our days smoother, more comfortable, and honestly… more fun.
After multiple trips (and a few hard-earned lessons), here’s exactly what’s in our Disney bag for a family of four…the items that have either saved us or made our park days even better.
First Things First: The Bags
Jeff carries this backpack in the parks, and I carry this crossbody.
I love the crossbody because it has multiple compartments and built-in spots for my credit card and ID. Even though we use MagicBands, I like having backup essentials easily accessible just in case. I can also wear it around my waist if needed as some might call…a fanny pack.
Jeff becomes what we call “Pack Mule Daddy,” the backpack holds the family gear. The crossbody holds the things that are nice to have two of or in close proximity to me like lip balm, hand sanitizer, my phone etc.
Our Disney Bag Must-Haves
1. Disposable Ponchos
Florida weather does what Florida weather wants.
Whether it’s a pop-up storm that wasn’t on the forecast or splash-heavy rides like Tiana's Bayou Adventure or Kali River Rapids, disposable ponchos are lifesavers.
Take up almost no space
Keep you dry on water rides
Can be tossed after use so you don’t have to carry around a wet jacket when you are done using it.
They are lightweight. Cheap. Worth it. They go with us every time and are great to have on hand for other experiences in life like going to the zoo etc.
2. Zip-Top Bags
Disney portion sizes are… generous.
And when you’ve basically refinanced your house to buy a caramel apple, you’re not throwing it away. Zip-top bags are perfect for:
Half-eaten cookies
Candy apples
Leftover popcorn
Any other partially eaten snacks you swear someone will finish later and makes you feel better to tell yourself that.
They also double as protection for electronics during rainstorms. We like the sturdier freezer versions.
3. Mini Portable Phone Charger
If you’re using the My Disney Experience app to:
Check wait times
Mobile order food
Navigate the parks
Book Lightning Lanes
…your battery will drain faster than you expect.
We would not make it through a full park day without a portable charger. We use them on every trip we take, not just Disney.
4. Nexcare Waterproof Bandages
Sure, they’re great for cuts.
But where they really shine? Blisters.
Disney = lots of walking + heat + humidity. These waterproof bandages stay put even when everything else is sweaty. Cover a hot spot early and save your day.
5. Anti-Chafe Stick (Megababe Is Our Favorite)
Heat + humidity + miles of walking = potential chafing.
We like Megababe, but any good anti-chafe stick works. Prevention is key here. Apply before you think you need it.
Future-you will be grateful.
6. Burt’s Bees Lip Balm
This lives in every bag we own. Always. Non-negotiable.
7. Sunscreen
It’s Florida. That’s all.
We bring a sunscreen that doesn’t irritate anyone’s skin and reapply throughout the day. Even on cloudy days. Even in winter.
This one is our favorite for bodies, this one is our favorite for faces.
8. Packable Outdoor Blanket
There is nothing more magical than an impromptu snack break on the grass at Magic Kingdom with the castle in the background.
Makes snack stops more comfortable
Comes in clutch while waiting for fireworks
Gives kids a defined “sit here” space
Can double as a wrap if a kid(s) is cold in the evening
It takes up less room than you think, and we use it every trip.
9. Snacks (Yes, You Can Bring Your Own)
We absolutely consider Disney snacks part of the fun and there is usually one or two on our “must do” list at each park.
But sometimes:
You’re in a long line
Someone is getting hangry
It’s going to be a while before your dining reservation
Having snacks keeps everyone feeling their best.
It’s also a great way to save money at Disney... outside food is allowed. Our favorites:
10. Water Bottles
We typically bring two, 24 ounce bottles for our family of four and refill mid-day. You can ask for free cups of water at quick-service restaurants and this helps extend the draining of the water bottles.
We love Owala bottles because:
They don’t spill easily
They’re easy to open
You don’t have to touch the mouthpiece
That said, we don’t usually visit in peak summer heat. If you are, you may want more.
11. Hand Sanitizer
Call us germaphobes. We’re comfortable with it.
We use sanitizer:
After almost every ride
Before eating
Anytime hands feel questionable
Wet ones are great for sticky hands and quick cleanups.
12. Light Layers (Season Dependent)
If you’re visiting during cooler months or fluctuating temps, light layers are helpful for:
Early mornings
Air-conditioned indoor attractions
Late-night fireworks
They don’t take up much room but can make a big comfort difference.
This jacket is my favorite light layer for all things travel. Disney rope drops - yes. Sunrise hikes - yes. Biking in Tuscany - yes. I use it walking and jogging at home as well. It lives up to the name, the thing is amazing, and takes up almost no space. It even has some rain protection (think sprinkle, not deluge). They make it for kidsand men also.
Final Thoughts: A Little Prep = A Better Day
You can show up to Walt Disney World and let them handle everything.
But having a thoughtfully packed Disney park bag:
Prevents minor discomfort from becoming major problems
Saves money
Keeps everyone regulated (which, let’s be honest, matters a lot)
Makes the day feel easier
And when the day feels easier? The magic feels bigger.
